A commission is a great way to create a custom painting. Often commissions are of a meaningful place or memory. I can also accommodate specific size requirements or work with a designer’s mood board or color pallet.

One of my FAQs is if I will commission pieces without neon. While neon is my current obsession, I am open to neon-free commissions. Reach out and let’s talk.

How it works

BEFORE WE BEGIN

We’ll work together on the specifics of the painting:

  • Size

  • Color pallet

  • Subject

  • Price

  • Timeline

REFERENCE PHOTOS

If I’ll be working from your source images, you’ll provide at least 3-5+ photos unless I’ll be working off one specific photo. Good lighting in at least one photo is necessary, particularly if I’ll be painting a person or animal. If there’s a story behind it, I’d love to hear it.

Sometimes custom creations are variations on other works of mine, in which case you’ll let me know which paintings you’d like me to draw inspiration from.

IN PROGRESS

I will create ideas by stitching together different source images and/or past works. Usually, I will do a digital mock-up.
I’ll share that with you, we’ll discuss any feedback on the overall composition, colors, and other elements of the painting. I’ll make adjustments if needed and collaborate again with you on the changes. That will be the reference image that I paint from.

I typically share process photos along the way.

You can also wait until the end to be surprised. Sometimes it’s unclear for someone who is not accustomed to seeing the messy-in-the-middle process to envision the completed painting, so it’s easier to wait until it’s closer to complete.

You’ll have the opportunity to request a few minor adjustments at the end. That might be “a little more clouds here,” “some more yellows over there.”

Timeline

One month is normally the minimum timeline, although during busy seasons can be longer. Larger pieces usually take longer than small paintings. Rush orders may be available for an extra fee. Please let me know if there are any dates you’d like it by - i.e. birthday or anniversary gift, a party, before you leave for vacation, etc - and I will do my best to accommodate. We’ll discuss and agree on a timeline before beginning the project.

Payment

50% is due before starting, and the remaining 50% is due upon completion. The initial deposit is not refundable and covers materials and time to create a beautiful, special, one-of-a-kind artwork just for you.

Inquire about the price list. Certain subjects may have a premium.

Shipping

If it’s being shipped, I ship at cost and fully insured. I invoice for this after the painting is complete and will ship once payment is received. We can also discuss in-person delivery or pick-up.

Inspiration

Take a look at my paintings for inspiration on your custom painting.

I view commissions as an opportunity to explore different subject matter. Some of my favorite series have originated with commissions. If the style of painting you’re looking for differs significantly from my work, I am happy to refer you to another artist who primarily works in that style.

As with all original art, I retain the rights to the artwork for commissions. This means the original art is exclusively yours to enjoy. I can reproduce prints of the commission. If you would like to reserve the rights, you may do so at an additional fee. If you’re interested in using the digital image for anything, like on a product, we can enter into a licensing agreement.
